BCAC RACE SERIES
Strong Like Tom is proud to be part of the BaseCamp Athletic Club Race Series, a community‑driven collection of local events that encourages runners to train local and race local. Strong Like Tom became apart of the series in 2024.
Memorial Sloan Kettering
All proceeds from this fundraiser go directly to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, supporting the research of Dr. Dana E. Rathkopf, who provided direct care to Tom during his treatment. Her work in advanced prostate and genitourinary cancers has contributed to recent clinical breakthroughs in targeted and hormone‑based therapies, helping extend and improve patients’ lives and underscoring the importance of continued research support.
Remembering Tom
Tom’s story starts simply with health. Diagnosed with high cholesterol in his early 30s and aware of his family history, he turned to running to take control of it. That path led him to Hill Runners and later to Base Camp, where running became more than exercise and quickly turned into connection and community. In 2019, Tom achieved a lifelong dream by qualifying for the Boston Marathon, but just months later, during a routine exam and completely without symptoms, he was diagnosed with stage 4 prostate cancer that had already spread to his bones. As the world shut down with COVID, Tom faced aggressive treatment head on, choosing an innovative CAR T clinical trial and staying relentlessly optimistic through it all. That strength sparked something bigger as the Base Camp community rallied around him with daily notes, challenges, races run in his name, and a message that carried everyone through, Strong Like Tom.
